Shot Guide
What counts as in play
The Core Rule
In Play = you confidently expect a normal shot outcome.
"Possible" does not equal in play. If you're managing or surviving — it's X.
Designations
F Fairway
Ball is in the fairway. Normal shot expected.
Fp Fairway In Play
Use only if all are true: light rough / first cut, clear line to target, normal swing possible, you confidently expect a normal outcome.
Any doubt? → X
G Green
Ball is on the green. Normal putt expected.
Gp Green In Play
Use only if: fringe / apron / fairway just off green, routine chip or putt available, you confidently expect a standard up-and-down.
Bunker, deep rough, short-sided, buried → X
X Recovery / Trouble
Use whenever you do NOT confidently expect a normal outcome: medium or deep rough, trees, blocked angle, punch-out, any bunker, awkward or buried lies, any situation requiring above-normal execution.
All bunkers = X. No exceptions.
Hz¹ Hz² Hazard / Penalty
Hz¹ (P1) — 1-stroke penalty. Red or yellow stake lateral/line relief.
Hz² (P2) — 2-stroke equivalent. OB, lost ball, stroke & distance, local rule drop.
The Decision
Would you confidently expect a normal outcome?
Yes → Fp or Gp   No → X
Quick Examples
FpFirst cut, clean lie, clear line GpFringe, simple chip to flat pin XMedium or deep rough XAny bunker (fairway or greenside) XTrees / punch-out required XShort-sided, buried, or awkward lie XFlyer concern / distance uncertainty
OB & Lost Ball Note
Both OB and Lost Ball use P2-equivalent scoring regardless of which option you choose.

The pace-of-play shortcut (Local Rule drop) is not the official USGA/R&A rule. It simulates stroke-and-distance without returning to the previous spot. Scoring stays P2.
Rules of Golf
Quick reference & relief procedures
🔴 Red Stake — Water Hazard
+1 penalty stroke. Choose any:
1. Play it as it lies (no penalty)
2. Line relief — drop on the flag-to-crossing line, back as far as you want, within 1 club-length either side
3. 2 club-lengths from crossing point, no closer to hole
4. Opposite side, equidistant, within 2 club-lengths
5. Stroke & distance — replay from previous spot (+1)
🟡 Yellow Stake — Water Hazard
+1 penalty stroke. Choose any:
1. Play it as it lies (no penalty)
2. Line relief — drop on the flag-to-crossing line, back as far as you want, within 1 club-length either side (+1)
3. Stroke & distance — replay from previous spot (+1)
⬜ Out of Bounds / Lost Ball
Standard: Stroke & distance — replay from previous spot (+1)
Local Rule (if in effect): Drop within 2 club-lengths of fairway edge nearest the crossing point, no closer to hole (+2)
⛳ Unplayable Lie
+1 penalty. Choose any:
1. Stroke & distance — replay from previous spot
2. Back-on-the-line relief — drop on the flag-to-ball line, any distance back
3. Lateral relief — 2 club-lengths from ball position, no closer to hole
Note: In a bunker, options 2 & 3 require staying in the bunker, or take +2 to drop outside.
🏌️ Dropping Rules
• Drop from knee height
• Ball must land in the relief area and stay there
• If ball rolls outside the area, re-drop (max 2 tries; then place)
• Ball cannot be cleaned unless taking relief (exception: on the green)
🟢 Putting Green
• Mark & lift your ball to clean — always
• Repair spike marks, pitch marks, and scrapes
• Remove loose impediments (leaves, stones)
• Flag in or out — your choice (no penalty either way)
• Ball overhanging hole: 10-second wait, then it's a miss
• Wrong green: take free relief (no penalty) — drop off the green, no closer to hole
📋 Penalty Summary

Cross-Course Showdown
Side bets: greenies, sandies, birdies, longest drive — auto-calculated from shot data.
🌎 Cross-Course Showdown
Play different courses. Compete on the same leaderboard.
Half your group plays Dominion Valley. Half plays a course in another city. Same Saturday morning game — normalized against par, live leaderboard, side bets settle automatically. Nobody has built this.
Real World Example
Four Sultans of Swing fly to Myrtle Beach and play Course X Sunday morning. The other four Sultans play their regular Dominion Valley game back home. Same tee times, same game format, one shared leaderboard — both foursomes competing as a single Sultans showdown. Geography doesn't break the group.
Extends to vacations, corporate groups across locations, and international cross-course tournaments.
All Community features arrive in Module 2.
The foundation is being built now.
